Fort Hancock defended New York Harbor first
from assault by sea and then from air attack from
1898 to 1972, when it was decommissioned and
turned over to the National Park System. The
fort includes gun batteries and over 100 other
buildings, including the Sandy Hook Lighthouse
and the Spermaceti Cove Visitor Center.

In June 1778, the Battle of Monmouth was a
political triumph for the Continental Army and
General George Washington, who met the British
in an open field and forced them to retreat. Visitors
learn about the battle through wayside exhibits,
and a reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth is
held annually in late June.

The museum presents the role of the New Jersey
Militia and National Guard, using original and
reproduction uniforms, weapons, photographs,
artifacts and art from the colonial period to the
present day.

The memorial honors the sacrifices made by New
Jersey residents who served or gave their lives
serving in Southeast Asia. An open-air pavilion
includes 366 black granite panels engraved
with the name, date of birth and date of casualty
of each New Jerseyan killed or missing. Three
symbolic statues stand at the center of the pavilion
honoring all who served. The unique museum and
educational center present information about the
Vietnam era through videos, artifacts and moving
letters from the veterans who served between
1959 and 1975.
