Best of all, it’s just a 35-minute ferry ride from
Manhattan or 20 minutes from the Garden State
Parkway (exit 117) by car.
The first stop on any visit should be the Harbor,
which you’ll find packed with sailboats through
the summer and offers fishing trips with a fleet
of eight party boats all year. From the Harbor,
walk or bike the Henry Hudson trail, which hugs
the waterline for nearly two miles. For the more
adventurous, there are fabulous hiking and
mountain-biking trails in nearby Hartshorne and
Huber Woods parks.
First Avenue, which leads from the Harbor, is a
classic small-town Main Street with a large variety
of unique stores. Whether you are looking for
jewelry and designer sunglasses or one-of-a-kind
gifts and arts and crafts, you’ll find it there. In the
summer there is a farmers’ market offering local
produce in Veteran’s Park.
Want to take a break? There are two independent
coffee shops, a gourmet ice cream store and, for
the more health-conscious, a vegan juice bar. For
those who like something a little stronger, a visit to
the tasting room at craft brewer Carton is a must.
Atlantic Highlands first became popular as a
tourist destination in the Victorian era when
steamers brought visitors over from New York
in the summer. Many wealthy New Yorkers built
summer homes here, and you can still stroll
by those beautifully preserved homes today.
Perhaps the most spectacular is the Strauss
Mansion, which is now home to the town’s
Historical Society and is open to the public. Check
out the museum’s exhibits and enjoy the wide
verandas with beautiful views over the water and
surrounding hills.
When it is time to eat, there’s something for all
tastes and budgets in Atlantic Highlands, from
gourmet Italian and Southwestern to Thai, gastro
pubs and casual dining. Follow up at the dessert
theater or catch a movie at one of the few smalltown
cinemas left in New Jersey.
Don’t miss sunset with the lights of New York coming on in the
background. There are great views all along the town’s waterfront or from
Mount Mitchill, the highest point on the eastern seaboard south of Maine!
Want to spend a second day with us? Try spending the night at our
upscale boutique hotel, right on First Avenue.
Highlights of the year include the Fireman’s Fair and Fireworks display in
July, the free FilmOneFest outdoor short-film festival, the classic car show,
Taste of Atlantic Highlands and the Halloween parade.
