HOW EVERY STUDENT
CAN SUCCEED
IN HIS NEW BOOK, THE ELEPHANT IN THE CLASSROOM, NOTED
St. Petersburg neuropsychologist Mack Hicks exposes significant flaws in our
education system and tells parents how every student can succeed. His premise
is that “the elephant in the classroom” is the myth that all Americans are equal
in terms of talent and skills. His answer is that the system needs profound and
necessary changes in both emphasis and direction. He opposes the thought that
all children have the same academic potential, that all children are similar in nature,
and that everyone should go to college. He has a plan that would lead to reform,
and other options are economically viable.
The book is a fascinating assessment of our current educational system and
should be read by every parent with children in school, as it will change their
thoughts about the goals and aspirations that they will pass along to these young
students.

AN APPROACH TO LIVING
Take Control of Your Anxiety
T HIS NEW BOOK IS BY DR. CHRIS CORTMAN, DR. HAROLD SHINITZKY
and Dr. Laurie-Ann O’Connor, all of whom are well-known psychologists
who deal with anxiety disorders. They believe that this book will help
people to understand and take control of their anxiety if they will apply the
principles, do the exercises, and practice the new thinking style and techniques
that they suggest. These personal strategies are designed to help control an individual’s
thinking pattern to avoid panic attacks. Despite its subject matter, this book is
entertaining and easy to read. However, it is not a miracle book that works on its
own. Readers will need to make some effort to make changes in themselves. Since
over 80-percent of Americans experience symptoms of anxiety, this book may help
those who deal with depression or other signs of anxiety.
