MAXIMIZING RETURN ON INVESTMENT:
When Intelligent Power Distribution Units
and DCIM Collaborate
One of the daily operational challenges for facilities and IT network managers
in data centers is managing site capacity. How do you deliver reliable power
and cooling to equipment and use every possible rack space before investing
in additional capacity? Capacity planning might be easier if every device used
equal and steady amounts of power and cooling, allowing the division of
resources equally across racks.
But modern compute does not operate that way. Data center equipment
continues to become more compact and powerful, and modern networks
are built across multiple devices, not just one. Today’s data center managers
and operators face machines that operate at high utilization with constantly
varying demands as workloads change. The impact is varying power,
environmental and supply air requirements—for every rack in the site, at any
time of the day.
This ever-changing environment can be easily managed by actively
monitoring at the rack-level where the variability is created and must be
