So many people are dependent on gadgets
connected to the world through some type of wireless
technology. Whether cellular, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth®,
or the myriad other technologies already here or on
the horizon, today’s wireless world could not exist
without wired or optical fibered networks. However,
the focus of this article is on the invisible side of the
networking world—the side that uses uncontained
radio and light waves scattering through the ether, and
many of the technologies and standards to make and
manage them. The list of standards is not exhaustive,
since there are many more technologies and standards
efforts in the works around the world—too many to
capture in one writing. What has been captured are
the standards that are having the greatest impact
on current trends.
