Powerful Portraiture
Even as a young girl, Carrie Smith felt the urge to use
vibrant colors to create her artwork. She received her
degree in Arts from Ohio University, where she worked
in a studio on campus as part of their painting program.
She continued to paint portraits, which eventually became
the sole focus of her work and her senior thesis exhibition.
Carrie began to use huge canvasses, that ranged in size from
four-feet by four-feet to four-feet by six-feet, to create larger
than life renderings of her family, friends and subjects against
decorative backgrounds in a realistic style. Immediately after
her college graduation, she entered her work into a variety of
juried exhibitions where she won “Best of Show” three times
in the first year.
