Unlike some artists, Carrie believes
the titles of her paintings, which are
often inspired by lyrics from songs, are
important on several levels. She is more
than an artist. Carrie is also a storyteller
who believes that behind every face is a
magical mixture of mystery and emotion
that is waiting to be revealed when she
captures it on canvas. 9

Smith captures
her mother’s
strength of
character in
this work.
Smith chose
to paint
this portrait
based upon
the unique
look of the
subject.
She searches
for their
states-of-mind,
which she reveals
through their
expressions and
attitudes.
She uses dramatic lighting that
often creates somewhat haunted
appearances in her subjects.
