Alice Young, known as Sweet
Alice to many in the Tampa Bay
area, moved to Florida from
Tennessee in 1962. Always
showing compassion and generosity
toward others, she adopted a little
person couple in 1965. She was their
only family for more than 40 years.
Edith died at 90 and Arthur would
have been 100 in two weeks when he
died. In 1968, Alice founded the Big
Sisters program in Pinellas County.
The focus was to help children who
needed someone to turn to for
guidance and be a role model. She
got her only little sister, Melita, at
age 5, a relationship that has lasted
53 years. Melita wouldn’t be where
she is today without the support
of Alice. That helped her to get a
college education and open her own
two businesses.
At 77, Alice, along with others,
rappelled down a 19-story building,
raising $120,000 for the Big
Brothers/Big Sisters of Tampa Bay.
At several of her birthday parties,
there were over 200 toys donated
and given to All Children’s
Hospital. At Thanksgiving, she
delivers food to the Clearwater
fire station on Belcher Road and at
Christmas time, she rings a bell for
the Rotary Club of Clearwater. 9
