WEALTH MANAGEMENT
ROLE OF A RETIREMENT PLANNER
Let me start off by asking you a
question….
If you wanted to get your heart diagnosed,
you would visit a doctor, correct? However,
will you visit a Cardiologist, an Orthopedist,
or a Pulmonologist? They are all doctors but
in this specific case, it would be ideal to visit
a Cardiologist, right?
Just as there are specialists in the medical
field who are all referred to as doctors,
the financial planning industry is quite
similar in that fashion. Because everyone
in this industry considers themselves a
financial planner, our goal is to give you a
breakdown on what you should be looking
for when hiring a competent Financial or a
Retirement Planner to help you with your
needs.
First, clearly defining your goals &
needs would help you narrow down your
options significantly. As mentioned above,
since there is variety of financial planners,
clearly defining your needs will allow you
to focus on a specific category of advisors.
Let’s discuss those categories and types of
financial planners that currently exist for a
brief moment –
• Brokers – These advisors typically focus
on transactional businesses and primarily
focus on your investment portfolio and types
of funds or investments you should buy.
However they have little to no expertise in
comprehensive financial planning and asset
distribution strategies.
• Insurance Agents with Securities
Licenses – These advisors are masked
insurance agents. Their primary goal is to
focus on selling insurance based products
without reviewing a client’s comprehensive
financial planning picture. They are also
transaction based advisors.
• Retirement Planners – These advisors
are equipped with the knowledge and
expertise of strategically creating an asset
distribution plan for clients to ensure their
clients aren’t taking too much market risk,
enhance after-tax income & growth, and
making their money last throughout their
lifetime, while protecting their legacy.
• Financial Consultants – Financial
Consultants typically work with clients
in growth phases of their lives to ensure
their clients are saving enough money for
their short-term, mid-term, and longterm
goals.
Before you decide to work with an
advisor, perhaps these are some of the
questions you should ask in addition to
what you already have in mind.
• What type of clients do you work with?
Pre-Retirees? Retirees? Accumulators?
Stock Jockeys?
• Do you have an income tax and financial
strategy working together? Does the
right hand know what the left hand is
doing?
• How are you getting compensated based
on the recommendations you’ve provided?
• Are you a Fee Based advisor? Transaction
based? Or Commissions based?
• What type of investment strategies do
you use for someone like me?
• What makes your work different?
At The Holland Group, our number
one objective is to understand our clients’
goals & needs and develop a prudent plan
around those goals. Chasing stocks and
speculating on the market is the exact
opposite of what we do. Our theory is,
you have to have a written plan for your
investment strategy in which the right hand is
constantly communicating with the left hand.
What that means is you have a plan where you
are invested conductively to your tax return.
A prudent plan…instead of gambling
and speculating on the next hot
mutual fund or a sector fund.
