Your first appliqué should look something like this once trimmed.

Continue to run the remaining embroidery steps for your design,
stopping before the final step.
Once tacked in place, use a pair of scissors to trim away the
excess fabric.
Following your designs numbered machine steps, continue to
place and tack the remaining appliqués for your design, like
shown above.
Now, take a 9” cut of ribbon, fold in half to create a loop, and
place the raw ends of your ribbon about 1⁄2” over the outer tacking
stitch. Use tape to secure the ribbon in place, if needed.
