of the New Gallery of Modern Art in Charlotte, North Carolina.
New Era is a headwear company based in NYC and they
were looking for an artist to collaborate on a few custom pieces
for the NBA All Star Game that was coming to Charlotte. Their
Design and Marketing team scheduled a visit to the studio, and
they were excited by the work they saw. They asked me what I
could do that would be cutting edge, represent their company,
and showcase my own work. I thought that the collaboration
would be a perfect fit since I primarily work in embroidery as
a medium and their caps showcase embroidery. After the visit,
I immediately went to the drawing board and sketched a few
different ideas.
“I IMMEDIATELY
The first idea that came to me was to deconstruct the caps, cut
them into small squares, wrap the fabric square onto smaller

done this technique in multiple series including: Americana,
Abstract, Disorder, and Shine a Light When it’s Gray Out, but
never on this scale.
