Not only did they like all of the ideas, they wanted to pursue
all of them and, as an artist, this is the best reaction you can
get. The only issue was that this was only 4 weeks away
from All Star Game. After a few weeks of design tweaking
and laying out ideas, New Era sent a crate of caps for me to
start deconstructing.
The first piece in the series was created by cutting apart over
300 Charlotte Hornets caps and embroidering the small 2”
pieces into a large mosaic that formed the NBA logo. The
embroidered pieces were combined with 3D printed tiles to
create the form in the final image. The finished piece measured
36” wide by 84” tall, consisting of over 750 individual pieces.
The next pieces in the series were the portraits of the players.
There were four 30”x 40” portraits in the series. Each one
featured over 100,000 stitches of embroidery. The stitching
was added to beards, hair, clothing, and, of course, the headwear.
Each player is featured in front of a step and repeat
embroidered background that features the Charlotte Hornet’s
honeycomb pattern along with basketballs and stars.
