
How to Evaluate an Offer
If a verbal offer is made, listen attentively and respectfully. If you are not clear about
any aspect of the offer, ask questions. Do not immediately debate or negotiate. It
is best not to accept or decline the offer right away. Ask when an answer is needed.
Tell them how appreciative and interested you are. Ask for the offer to be put in
writing.
When you receive the offer in writing, read it carefully. Is there anything missing
ask a trusted family member or friend to review it. Call or email the employer’s key
contact person with questions. If you have concerns or you need to negotiate, seek
to meet in-person or at least talk by phone, instead of trading emails.

• Get a feel for the culture, especially the personalities and values of key
employees and management.
• What is the starting salary or wage? What is the total salary/wage range for
salary/wage reviewed?
• Is there any commission or bonus? How much? Based on what? When is it
paid? Is there a hiring bonus? Ask about reimbursement for the lost bonus
you already earned but have not yet been paid from current employer?
• Is there insurance for health, dental, life, disability? Any portion of the cost
for you and/or your family that you have to cover? How much?
• What about 401(k) and savings plans? Any deferred compensation or
retirement plans? Do they offer stock or options in the company?
• How about the use of a mobile phone, laptop or tablet? Is there use of a car
or a car allowance?
