Step Five Searching 76
Networking Scripts & Cards
Imagine you are in an elevator. Someone gets on that you know, and they ask about
how you are doing. You tell them you are searching for a new job/career/work, and
they ask, “What are you looking for?” You have less than 30 seconds to respond.
What do you say?
30 Second “Elevator Pitch”
it is very different to verbalize them as part of a networking conversation. The
words might be the same, but now you add voice quality and intonation, plus
facial expressions and body language, all in the context of introducing yourself or
answering a question.
Whether called an elevator pitch, personal commercial or a networking speech,
you will help yourself by writing a networking script and practicing it. You
can communicate what you are looking for and the value you offer by using a
3-part message:
1. What employers need the most.
2. What do you do best that meets those needs.
3. What value will employers receive from the work you do.
Go to the next page to practice writing networking scripts. You may think 30 seconds
is not enough time, but you can actually speak 70-80 words without rushing. It is
enough time to not only “make the pitch,” but also greet someone, close by asking
for “who do you know,” and hand them a networking card.
