biggest difference in getting an offer is being prepared and passionate about
the job, employer and the opportunity to interview. Increase your chances of
hearing “yes” in your next interview whether by phone, in person or online.
• Connect what you do best with what employers need most.
• Be likable. People hire people they like. Get and keep a positive attitude.
Be Prepared & Passionate
First, do your homework on the employer and the job. Write down what you
like about the opportunity. Make a list of concerns and questions.
Second, outline a one-page interview discussion guide that includes:
• Your name and contact information, employer’s name, and the job to be done.
• Summary of positive facts about the employer.
• Your best attributes that summarize what you can do for the employer.
• Your career value and goals that match the opportunity the employer is offering.
Third, select STAR stories (see page 40) about your accomplishments that relate
most to the employer’s needs. Each story answers four questions.
• What was the Situation you faced?
• What was the Task to be accomplished?
• What were the Actions you took?
• What were the Results you got?
in a local Toastmasters club, where you can learn and practice how to tell your
stories, listen and respond.
