Step Five Searching 80
Social Media
Social websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and
YouTube can be helpful for networking.
Warning! If you are already registered on one or more sites, be aware that 92%
of all recruiters check your social media, so be very careful not to show…
• Drug or alcohol use.
• Spelling or grammar errors.
•
• Profanity, negative talk, political rants.
Do show a positive professional presence, as well as family, friends, personal
interests and hobbies. Invite your social media contacts to connect with you on
LinkedIn.
Employer Websites
The most direct way to learn about target opportunities is through employer
websites. Start with employers you listed as target opportunities on workbook
page 52. Search at least once a week for new information about their products,
services, management and (of course) job postings. Pay particular attention to
names and positions of people with whom you want to connect.
Job applications: Before applying for a job or posting your resume on an
employer website, do everything you can to get personal referrals to connect
with employees, especially relevant hiring managers, recruiters and human
resources representatives.
If you have the opportunity to either apply for a position and/or post a
customized-just-for-them resume, do it carefully. For larger employers that use
applicant tracking systems, be prepared with these tips…
•
• Review the application to be sure you have all the information ready.
• Answer all questions, including current, history or desired salary if asked.
• Do not exaggerate or misrepresent any information.
• Do not list references without their permission.
