Step Five Searching 70
Connect 4 Ways
1. Online networks and social media, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter
and Instagram, provide effective ways to connect, with the added advantage
of discovering information about each person. See pages 79-80.
2. Email, texts and letters
3. Phone calls
personal and productive conversations per hour. Follow-up with a brief
email and maybe even a personal meeting.
4. In-person meetings can be the most effective – either by face-to-face or
video conference. In-person meetings also happen in group settings such
as job fairs, networking events, study classes, career centers, association
or community meetings.
Emails & Letters
Put your best thoughts in writing and send them directly to the person you
want to reach.
The great thing about writing is that it forces you to be clear about what you want
and how you can help. The advantage of email is speed and ease of sending,
receiving, replying and forwarding. The advantage of postal mail is that few
people actually use it anymore, which means you will absolutely stand out.
Emails and letters are most useful for three purposes:
1. An introduction that includes your resume.
2. A follow-up request for information or contacts.
3. A thank you after networking or interviewing.
Get your own email address. Do not use your work email for personal reasons,
especially for job search. “At least two-thirds of employers monitor workers’
rights to do so,” The ePolicy Institute. Go to crossroadscareer.org/step-5 and
