PUFFY APPLIQUÉ F-PA
Puffy Appliqué is a great way to add a bit of depth and
dimensionality to your quilt block. Similar to the look of
Trapunto, Puffy Appliqué uses hi-loft batting underneath an
appliqué to create a “puffed up” look to certain elements.
A placement stitch will run to indicate where your puffy
element will go; then, a piece of hi-loft batting will get tacked
down using a specially-digitized “spot tack.” The spot
tack will go around your hi-loft batting, placing small, 2-ply
tacking “spots” all around the shape. These spot tacks help
press the hi-loft batting down on the edges so a tacking
stitch can run without the foot catching on the puffy area.
Once the excess batting gets trimmed, you’ll be left with a
higher lofted element in your block. This technique is totally
beginner-friendly, and you are sure to catch on to it quick!
