rabbit. The rabbit comes up out of the hole,
goes around the tree, and then goes back
down into the hole.
COILING A LINE
The lines on your boat, whether sailboat or
powerboat, should be properly coiled and
neatly stowed when underway.
• They are then easy to access when you
need them
• They do not get fouled around objects or
people on the boat or dock
• Coiling is an important safety measure
• Laid 3-strand line will coil naturally in the
direction of the twist in the lines
• Braided line has no preferred direction
and often loops naturally into figure
eights.
To Coil Halyards After
Fastening Them to a Cleat
Coil the excess line and form a loop on the
cleat to hold the coil. Coil laid line with the
lay. Most laid line is twisted left to right,
which means coiling in that direction.
• Holding the line in your left hand, make
equal-diameter loops about two feet long
with your right hand.
• As each loop is made into the open palm
of the left hand, make a quarter turn to
the right with your right hand (if lefthanded,
reverse the hands).
