1) Anyone seeing someone fall
overboard should immediately
shout “MAN OVERBOARD”,
maintaining visual contact with
the person in the water, while
continuously pointing toward
that person to assist the helmsman
maneuver the boat during
the recovery process.
2) All brace for recovery maneuvering.
3) MOB GPS capability should be
activated by the helmsman or
person handling navigation
4) Anyone with access to throwable
floatation aids should
be prepared to throw one or
more to the person in the water
and tend the retrieving line if
attached to the floatation aid.
5) All on board put on life jackets
if not already wearing one.
6) Captain will designate persons
to rig recovery ladders or
devices.
7) Approach the person in the
water against the wind and
waves or current.
8) When close aboard shut off
engine and engage the transmission
to prevent accidental
engine starting and free propeller
rotation.
NOTES:
1) The type and size of vessel
will determine the method for
bringing the person on board.
2) If vessel is open with helm offset
to port or starboard, approaching
person on the side of the
helm will allow helmsman to
assist bringing the person back
on board.
3) First Aid Kit and warm blankets
may be required.
4) Use VHF to request assistance
if required.
5) Blue Water cruising will require
additional safety equipment.
j. Location of VHF/DSC radio and/or
cell phone (conduct radio check w/Sea
Tow)
k. Location of flares and other visual
distress signals
l. Location of fire extinguishers and
extinguisher ports to engine compartment
(if applicable)
m. Anything relevant about the particular
vessel being used

Add activities as appropriate for the message
to be conveyed.
Reminder:
1. All on-the-water programs must be
pre-approved by the Squadron or District
and documented in meeting minutes to
comply with insurance coverage requirements.
2. All onboard must be briefed using the
guidance in the “PASSENGER PRE-DEPARTURE
CHECKLIST” in Appendix
D or Section 3 Table 3-1.
3. This America’s Boating Course
On-The-Water Teaching Aid Guide has
been submitted to the Boat Operator
Certification and On-The-Water Training
Committee as required and has their
approval.
