• When you’re done coiling the line, reach
through the coils and pull a portion of the
slack line through the coils.
• Twist this slack line and place the twist
over the cleat; this forms a sort of spring
that will hold the coil in place.
You may coil braided line without the
quarter-turn twist. Since no twist is woven
into the line, there is none to be removed.
To Coil Spare Line
Coiling loose lines makes them ready to use
(Figure 16-5).
• Coiling properly avoids tangles. Preserving
the lay of the rope will make for line
that coils easily and pays out smoothly.
• As you coil a rope, place a slight twist in
the line to flatten the coils.
Section 16: Knots and Lines 181
Tips: To prolong the life of whatever line you choose:
• When not in use, keep line out of the sun, clean, dry, and coiled
neatly.
• Don’t leave knots in a stowed line for long periods of time.
Knots in a line weaken the fibers.
• Near the end of the line, wrap the line
three times or more around the coils.
• Form a loop in the end of the line and
pass it between the coils.
• You can either pass the end of the line
through the loop to allow the coiled line
to be hung or pass the loop over the top
of the coil to allow the coiled line to be
stored in a compartment.
