18 Chapter One
Figure 1-45. Schooners have two or more masts. The forward
mast is the same height or shorter than the mainmast. Schooners
are usually medium to large size vessels.
Figure 1-46. Motorsailers are combination sailboats and powerboats
with features of both. They have larger engines and
smaller sails than sailboats. They also have larger and more comfortable
cabins. In motorsailers, sailing ability is often sacrificed
for roominess.
Figure 1-47. Multihulls come in twin hulls (catamarans) and triple
hulls (trimarans) like their powerboat cousins. The multihull
is particularly suited to sailing since these boats can carry larger
sails and still resist the heeling motion caused by the wind.
Figure 1-48. Lateen rig refers to a form of small sailboat made
popular by the Sunfish and Sailfish boats. These are small
enclosed hulls with or without a small cockpit. They often use a
daggerboard and are distinguished by their single lateen rigged
sail. These boats are very easy to sail and are now produced by a
number of companies.
