16 Chapter One
Figure 1-38. Bass boats are a special class of boats designed
specifically for fishing in lakes and streams. They have high
platforms and seats to provide good visibility and easy casting.
Today, these boats often have considerable power to travel
quickly to fishing spots, and use smaller electric motors for
maneuvering.
Figure 1-39. Pontoon boats are shallow-hulled boats with a
platform built on pontoons. The original pontoon boat was a
wooden raft built over two rows of steel drums. Now these boats
are fancy and fast and made of fiberglass, aluminum, or steel.
They are used for parties, swim platforms, and fishing on inland
waters.
Figure 1-40. Houseboats have enclosed structures. They offer
spacious living quarters at deck level and may have a flying
bridge and sun deck above the cabin or deckhouse. Often constructed
on pontoons, houseboats should be used in protected
waters. Their shallow hull design and superstructures with large
expanses of windows make them vulnerable to strong winds and
high seas.
Figure 1-40a. Paddleboard when beyond the narrow limits of
swimming, surfing or bathing areas is a vessel under 46 U.S.C.
2101 and subject to regulations administered by the USCG.
