Raw edge appliqué is a slightly different approach from the standard
appliqué we’ve now learned. Just like a standard appliqué, Raw Edge
uses the same placement and tack down steps, but will differ in the type
of finishing stitch. Rather than a satin stitch finish to your appliqué, the
appliqué is left exposed as an unfinished edge.
As the name implies, this appliqué variation has a raw edge that becomes
accented with the bean stitches. Therefore, using sturdier fabrics such
as felts or knits to avoid fraying will provide the best results as well as
allowing your piece to be cherished for years to come.
