RAW EDGE APPLIQUÉ - ANATOMY OF THE DESIGN
Raw edge is an easy technique that anyone new to quilting can use to create some variety in a quilting project. Since there is
no finishing stitch to cover your edges, the clean look is created by a bean stitch passing over your tack down lines. It is best
to leave a uniform amount of fabric around your raw edge appliqué, and as a general rule of thumb, we like to leave 1⁄8” of
fabric around our design. If you choose to use a cotton or linen like we did below but prefer a more finished look, your fabrics
can be pretreated with a liquid seam sealant, such as Fray Check.
Raw edge appliqué gets accented
with a bean stitch that works to
both secure your tack down as
well as create a decorative finish.
Notes:
As the name implies, the
unfinished, or raw, edge
is left exposed, creating
a more dimensional look
than standard appliqué.
