RAGGED EDGE APPLIQUÉ - ANATOMY OF THE DESIGN
Ragged Edge Appliqué is a great technique to use when looking for a more casual or softened effect to your quilting design
since the fabric will be loose against your base fabric. All of the ragged edge designs include a basting stitch to create
perfectly sized raw edges for each appliqué. Once the basting stitch is pulled out, the edges are snipped 1⁄8” to 1⁄4”apart,
creating the ragged edge. This technique is popular in children’s quilts as well as those with artistic or nature inspired themes.
Notes:
Different fabric choices can
be used to really highlight the
ragged edge look, such as
denims, cotton fabrics like we
used here, and even linens.
The ragged edge creates
a slightly raised edge from
the fabric lifting away
from the tack down. This
adds a great “floating”
effect to your appliqué.
