Choosing fabrics & Threads
Fabric Threads Notions
Free standing means the design will
be free from being attached to a base
fabric or quilt block, but that does not
necessarily mean no fabric needed!
These beautiful butterflies require an
appliqué step to create a base for the
stitches to secure onto.
We chose to use Poly-Twill for our
butterflies, a polyester fabric known
for its diagonal weave. Choose a color
that works with your thread choices,
as some of the fabric or twill will be
visible through the stitch design!
These butterflies are as easy as it gets
with fun, free standing designs! When
picking thread colors, you can choose
a real butterfly photo for inspiration,
or use your creativity to come up with
something entirely unique!
For our butterfly design, we
chose 2 vibrant threads, a lighter
complimentary shade, and basic
black and white for accent details and
the final satin stitch.
Since we are making a free standing
design, there are a few basic notions
that will be needed to make your new
butterfly. To start, you will need a
piece of medium to heavy weight tear
away stabilizer.
You will also need a pair of appliqué
scissors for trimming. If you will be
making one of the project ideas, you
may need to adjust your notions
to include to other items, such as a
rotary cutter and ruler.
