Choosing fabrics & Threads
fabric threads notions
These blocks are created in a special
way: with printed fabric! This means
you’ll be making your base fabric
using the printed fabric steps to
follow these pages.
You will need a coordinating fabric
for the folded fabric borders, so
try selecting a fabric with a neutral
color, and maybe even a little texture
to give the block some dimension!
We incorporated a taupe linen into
our printed fabric blocks, giving the
finished borders a look of burlap,
commonly seen in gardening.
Your printed fabric blocks will each
incorporate a stippling step over
the printed fabric, and not all the
printed fabrics have the same color or
elements to carry through one thread.
Instead, break out the monofiliment
or clear thread for your stippling! It
will still give the finished quilted look
without clashing or distracting from
your printed background.
There are also 12 embroidered
designs to choose from, so your
threads will need to incorporate
colors for these as well.
For your printed fabric, it’s important
to specify that you will need an ink
jet printer, as well as a printable
fabric paper. The brand we have used
is Printed Treasures, but most sewing
and quilting shops will likely carry
a variety. Just be sure to follow any
printing and laundering instructions
as listed on the package to help your
designs last!
You will also need the usual rotary
cutter and ruler for measuring and
trimming your design as it finishes.
