Anatomy of a Zipper
To get the best results with your bag a nd prevent a ny
needle breaks in your machine, you’ ll wa nt to familiarize
yourself with the right zipper!
Opening Essentials
When making your zippered bag, the essential
materials certainly include your pretty fabrics,
but you can’t have a zipper bag without the
zipper! This break down page will help you
identify the important features of the zipper
you will need for this type of project.
The fabric on either side of your
zipper is known as the tape. An
ideal measurement for this fabric
in your zippered bags would be a
1/2” to either side of the coil.
The teeth of your zipper should
consist of a polyester or nylon coil,
with the coil sewn directly into the
zipper tape.
END GAME
Zippers come in a variety of ends depending
what project you are using them for. For example,
jackets and coats would require an open-ended
zipper that will split open to remove the garment.
For accessories like the zippered bag, you will
need a closed-end zipper. If your zipper is longer
than the placement space for the bag, simply line
up the zipper as intended in the steps and trim
away the excess when finishing your bag before
turning it right side out.
FUN FACT
If your zipper ever gets stuck, try placing a drop of
dish soap or even a small spritz of window cleaner
on the teeth, slide the zipper open gently, and
then you’ll be good to go!
